Alpine Ski

The first official practice is Monday, November 13, 2023. This is a dry land session that takes place at EHS.

Typically, our program does not make cuts. However, due to hill space limitations and/or insufficient skiing skills, cuts may be necessary. This cannot be determined until we have had a chance to ski together for a few days.

Dry land practices will take place Monday - Friday from 5:00 - 6:30 PM in the EHS Wellness Center. *Wear workout attire and athletic shoes. Dress in layers for the weather as you will likely spend time inside and/or outside. Bring water, small notebook, and a pen/pencil.

We will be on snow as soon as Hyland Hills is open to skiing and conditions are conducive to effective training. Once on snow, our practice time is Monday - Thursday 5:30 - 7:15 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM - Noon at Hyland Hills. Practice times may vary due to hill space and lane availability, so please be flexible!

1. An activity fee of $215.00 is payable to the school at registration.

2. A separate team fee is paid to "Edina Alpine Ski Team" to cover additional expenses, such as team banquet, team t-shirts, etc.

3. Each athlete must possess a valid lift ticket anytime they are on the hill. Athletes who choose not to purchase a season pass must purchase a daily lift ticket. Contact Hyland Hills Ski Area for latest ticket/season pass pricing.

Selecting and maintaining the proper equipment is critical to successful ski racing. Selecting a race boot that an athlete cannot flex can be as detrimental as using a poorly tuned recreational ski. In addition, there is no "one size fits all" solution for athletes. What works well for one athlete may not be the correct solution for another. If you have equipment questions, you may always contact Coach Jared.

Athletes need to secure the following equipment: 

• Required to Participate per MSHSL Rules:
  • Alpine race helmet (must meet current FIS specifications)
     
• Strongly Recommended, Required to be Successful:
  • Slalom race skis and bindings
  • Ski boots
  • Poles with hand guards
  • Shin guards
  • Warm winter outdoor clothing (layering is best)
  • Goggles (clear lens is generally preferred for most night skiing conditions)
     
• Recommended:
  • Chin guard for race helmet
  • Padded race suit/GS suit
     
• Optional:
  • Basic ski tuning supplies (edge tuning system, wax, iron, scraper, etc.)
  • Mouth guard

Where to find equipment:

• Pre-Season Tent Sales: New and used race equipment can be found at a deep discount from local retailers during pre-season sales, generally held in early- to mid-September.
• Ski Swaps: Used race equipment is available on select weekends during September and October. Buck Hill Ski Team, Team Afton, and Team Gilboa are a few that hold swaps.
• Local Retailers: If you miss the pre-season tent sales, most local retailers offer Edina Alpine a standing discount on regular priced items. Check with your local shop for the best pricing.
• Online Retailers: Some good values can be found online, however, you generally must know specifics when purchasing. In many cases, it may be more advantageous to shop locally.
• Teammates: Talk to your teammates, they may have used gear they are looking to sell.
